Metatarsal boots extend protection over the instep — the five metatarsal bones along the top of your foot. They're for work where loads roll or land on the middle of the foot: heavy materials handling, forestry, that kind of thing.

Check the ASTM F2413 marking inside the boot. You want I (impact), C (compression), and M (metatarsal) if the hazard calls for it. No marking means no verified protection, no matter what the box claims.

In a 2023 audit, we flagged a distribution center whose dock risk assessment called for metatarsal boots, but they'd bought steel toe across the board to save maybe $25 a pair. The injury case that followed ran past $40,000 in medical and lost time. Penny wise, pound foolish. Do the assessment first.

7. What does a quality inspector check first when a shipment arrives?

Most people check the boxes. We check the products, because a substandard batch can have a perfect box.
